This has got to be one of them.
To me, 1961 had four major events: JFK was elected president, Yuri Gagarin went into space, the Berlin Wall was built and the E-Type was launched.

I've always had a strange fascination with the '61 Plymouths, shown here in Fury guise.
No other car ever looked like it. Maybe for good reason, but I love it.

In many ways the 61 Continental set the luxury styling tone for the decade. From futuristic tail fins to elegance through simplicity (and coach doors).
PS repost for the morning crowd. Not a lot of traffic on a Sunday evening

Duntov sure got Corvette going in the right direction from '55 on and as much as I love the C2 Vettes, the late 50s early 60s Vettes were going in the direction of performance while still having that beautiful 50s styling. Literally the iconic American sportscar.

Chevrolet Corvair
Four wheel independent suspension. Air-cooled rear-mounted flat six. Available with a turbocharged engine and a four on the floor. I really don't think I need to justify this one, because it's that awesome.
Oldsmobile F-85 Cutlass
All-aluminum, turbocharged 3.5L V8. Need I say more? This and the Corvair were the first production turbocharged cars in the world.
Pontiac Tempest
Four wheel independent suspension, with a rear transaxle and a 326ci V8 up front. Had what they called a 'rope drive' that connected the engine to the transaxle. Yes, this is very much like a C5 and newer Corvette. It was a small tossable car much in the vein of a BMW that was very innovative but had its innovation killed off when the public started eating up muscle cars and manufacturers brought in profits.

While I'm all for Ferrari 250's and Abarths and Alfas, I'm going to nominate the 1961 Alpine A110.

JFK assumed the presidency - not ‘elected’ in 1961.
